is nothing new. four years ago it was then-president-elect obama and john mccain. >> i think that's a -- sends a great message to the american people. these two men were involved in a very bitter election for to be president of the united states. i think it speaks well of both of them to sit down and have lunch. >> reporter: earlier in the day the former gop nominee met with his former running mate paul ryan where an aide to the congressman said he had a constructive and positive conversation with mitt romney this morning. in addition to sharing updates from their families and reflections from the campaign, their forward looking conversation focused on resolving the critical fiscal and economic challenges ahead. translation, fiscal cliff. it's a challenge romney might have faced had he won. but as one of his strategists said on cbs, mistakes were made. >> i think we should have done a better job reaching out to women voters, the governor has a great record on women's issues. we should have done a better job articulating that record. and we should have done a better job reaching ou

and john mccain, a big press conference and really took a stance. the administration decides to send her up to try to repair things. they come out of the meeting, she obviously didn't graduate from any washington charm school, because even kelly ayotte it looked like they had just lost their best friend after that meeting. they were not happy. then there is another round of meetings and cork eri corker is saying he should withdraw the nomination. megyn: he said she would make a better dnc chair, that is debbie wasserman schultz job. >> it seems like a classic obama set up of the republicans. this is a way to bring up the whole war on women, meaning that republicans really don't understand women, look they don't have any female chairmen of their committees on capitol hill. they didn't get any of the female vote, and they just don't get it. they are doing this to this poor woman, and she is a great person and a great public servant. to me it seems like there is a political reason for continuing to, you know, trot her before the senators when they know it's not going to fly. megyn: really? the

senator. vice-president biden, david souter, and john mccain, and many others pay tribute. now, we will hear from a syrian opposition spokesman about the latest developments in the ongoing syrian civil war. the spokesman urged the international community to intervene, and called for u.s. leadership credit than just humanitarian aid. from the johns hopkins school of against humanitarian studies, this is an hour and a half. >> thank you. thank you for everyone. thank you for the john hopkins university for organizing this event. let me start by sharing with you a personal story that just happened today, which gives you just a sense of how our lives became tragic. today, one of my close friends, a well-known activist in my home town, has been killed by indiscriminate shelling in the city. dareaa is 7 kilometers south of damascus. and it has been days of fighting with the security forces. this is why the security forces target the city. it is very close to the damascus capital. they use the fighter jets and the shelling. the story of mohammad is very important. he is a peaceful activis

system, whether it's ronald reagan or george bush or john mccain, this has historically not been a terrible lee partisan issue. it has been in recent years, for a generation there was broad bipartisan support for reforming the immigration system in a way that reagan and others tried to do. i'm an optimist that something meaningful can get done next year i. think the republicans are recognizing they need to get smart about this. it's not just about politics but solving problems. if the republicans can stay focused on making sure the immigration system is better, that it meets the needs of our economy, does so in a way consistent with our values i think the two parties can come together next year and continue to make changes that will make the current immigration system better than it is today. jon: okay, but kate let's just say that happens, does president obama and maybe the democrats then get all the credit? >> well it's not going to really happen that way, because president obama, his goal is to vilify the republican party, i talk about it in my book, divider and chief constant

-to-face with rice yesterday republican senators john mccain and lindsey graham and kelly ayotte announced they were more troubled than ever. >> i continue to be troubled by the fact that the u.n. ambassador decided to play what was essentially a political role at the height of a contentious presidential election campaign. >> eliot: but president obama stood up for rice today during his first post-election cabinet meeting when asked about the ambassador's reception on the hill. >> obama: sue an rice is extraordinary. couldn't be prouder of the job she's done at the usun. >> joining me now is pj crowley who served under both presidents clinton and obama. he's now a professor at george washington university. thanks for your wisdom. >> hi, eliot. >> eliot: the reception that ambassador rice is getting on the hill is almost unprecedented unprecedented. i don't remember an u.s. diplomat being roughed up this way, is there a historical metaphor for this? >> not recently. i think in terms of the senate interfering, if you want to say that, you have to go back to john tower in 1989. i mean, politics is a c

was a spontaneous reaction to an anti-muslim video, some trouble-making clown made out in california. ignoring john mccain and his ail argue evidence it was an organized act of terrorism. not so says the president. his u.n. ambassador and close friend simply told the truth as she was permitted to tell it, what the cia gave her to say and no more. for that he charges susan rice, in the words of the new york post, being fried. political fight fans on the tabloids relish this extreme combat what should be a good person's judgment? that's my question tonight. is susan rice now a surrogate for the president, someone to take the punishment when others above her pay grade should be answering the questions, or is she accountable for going on national television knowing she can't tell the whole truth because it's classified? let's begin with senator susan collins, republican of maine. i guess it's the toughest question in the world, senator, and that is, do you believe that susan rice, the u.n. ambassador, knowingly covered up a breach of national security? >> well, let me say this, chris, our purpose is to

's they are going to try again next year, including john mccain, but a lot of other republicans by in large conservatives, they hate the united nations, they don't trust the united nations. they don't want international law, in their words, to interfere with domestic laws in the united states, whether federal law, state, or local laws. and one of the most recent major reasons why they rejected this treaty, these republicans by in large voted again ratifying this treaty was because of the powerful words that rick santorum, the former republican presidential candidate said. as you know, he has a severely disabled child, a little girl. he said, i don't want international lawyers, i don't want the united nations and new york and foreign countries telling me and our local officials what they can or cannot do as far as treatment for little bella, his daughter. and that was a powerful factor in convincing a lot of these republicans to reject this treaty. they didn't see that they needed the international community, in effect, to get involved in what was going on here in the united states. the coun

be no different." madam president, this wasn't some ultra liberal speaking. it was senator john mccain, a disabled veteran, a hero from the vietnam conflict, who broke with extremists and tea partiers and voted to ratify the treaty. the convention also has the strong support from a number of other leading republicans, including george h.w. bush, the first president bush, who by the way of course was a world war ii veteran, did heroic things during that war. and it also has the support of former senate majority leader bob dole, certainly a patriot. senator dole, a disabled veteran from world war ii, who led the fight to pass the treaty, was here yesterday urging republicans to support it. now, mr. president, think about that. robert dole, who was grievously injured in world war ii, spent more than two years in a hospital, he came to this senate floor, and the first speech he gave was on disabilities, and we needed to do something about it. he was here -- he led the fight to pass the treaty, urging republicans to support it. a few republicans greeted him as he was in his wheelchair here. they greete

on the hill, michael, there is a funny moment. some obscure issue, john mccain and john kerry actually agreed on and held a joint news conference and little back and forth needling of the other. here's john kerry when he finishes his remarks and calls on senator mccain. >> senator mccain -- >> thank you very much mr. secretary. [ laughter ] >> bill: talking state? >> thank you very much, mr. president. [ laughter ] >> this is what happens when you get two losers up here, folks. [ laughter ] we're just having fun. >> bill: good comeback on john kerry's part. >> mccain didn't think that was so funny. >> bill: all right. we've got lots to cover. john boehner actually out yesterday with a counterproposal on the fiscal cliff but how serious is it? really? we'll get into that and a whole lot more. but first -- >> this is the "full court press." >> other headlines making news, the new york city homeless man who was in that photo that went viral last week where a police officer brought him a pair of shoes on a cold n

, has stayed very, very quiet. yesterday he exchanged good natured ribbing with senator john mccain at a news conference called for support of a u.n. treaty to support those with disabilities around the world. mccain started it off. >> thank you very much, mr. secretary. [ laughter ] >> thank you very much, mr. president. [ laughter ] this is what happens when you get too loose. >> kerry and mccain are working together on the effort to persuade their senate colleagues to ratify the convention on the rights of persons with disabilities. as we discussed in the show yesterday, the treaty has run into opposition from more conservative members of the republican party. think of it as two wings of the party inside their isolationists and those who are just anti-u.n. even as they are internationalists. simply others that don't believe the u.n. should sign on as party to any united nations convention and because a two-thirds super majority is rard to ratify a treaty, that opposition means it will be close and they may lose. yesterday kerry told reporters he is about four votes short but thin

of her most outspoken critics, republican senators john mccain, lindsey graham, and kelly ayotte to set the record straight. rice had gone on five sunday talk shows days after the attack and called it a spontaneous demonstration sparked by an antimuslim film and did not mention the link to al qaeda. after all this taking on her critics, the republican senators weren't impressed. >> bottom line, i'm more dist b disturbed now than i was before that the 16 september explanation about how four americans died in benghazi, libya, by ambassador rice, i think does not do justice to the reality at the time and in hindsight clearly was completely wrong. >> rice maintains she did nothing wrong. issuing a statement saying we stressed that neither i nor anyone else in the administration intended to mislead the american people at any stage of this process. peter brooks is a former deputy assistant secretary of defense, general wesly clark and, of course, former democratic presidential candidate. senator mccain was asked who do you blame more at this point? ambassador rice or president obama? he says

were with us yesterday you'll remember that her bid to set the record straight with senators john mccain and lindsay graham and kelly ayotte could hardly have gone worse. they were more inflamed about rice's early public comments about the benghazi, libya attack than they had been before that meeting. cnn's dana bash has been watching all of this prenomination confrontation drama and joins us now to talk about this. i know you're trying to wrangle an interview and make sure you catch the senators as they emerge from the meetings. dana, it might sound to some as though some of the critics of ambassador rice feel differently about what they're criticizing. they don't all seem to be in lock step or at least have the same complaints. >> reporter: that's true. no question that there are different levels of issues that senators are upset about. i have to tell you the reason i'm on the phone now is because i'm waiting for a very important meeting that susan rice is having as we speak to wrap up and that is with senator susan collins. why is it important? because if she is nominated to be secret

. hillary clinton wasn't on the sunday shows. and as much as daryl issa and john mccain have been trying to get answers from the fbi and the cia and the intelligence committee and all of those other things, we have to go through susan rice. before we can work on preventing this from happening again, we have to agree on what exactly happened. and we don't fully know and we need to find out. >> i appreciate a lot of your position. if this was really about consulate security and what happened that day for a lot of these people, i would find that extremely valid. these are important questions. nobody wants this to happen again. it is completely a tragedy. but what we have is talking point police attacking susan rice because of what she said on the shows. look. they -- all these senators know the intelligence that she got. they know she was briefed by the intelligence community to say this. they know there's no duplicity. she was told what to say and whatnot to say. there's this bizarre kabuki theaters a foekt this. if it's above politics, it's attacking obama and the intelligence community.
